Head Wines (Barossa Valley)



Alex Head grundlagde Head Wines i 2006 og fik sin første vin på markedet i 2008. Og der er her tale om et virkeligt "Boutique Winery" med kvaliteten helt i top: Alex har kun ca. 7,5 ha vinmarker og den årlige produktion ligger på under 30.000 flasker. Inden Alex fik fod under egen vintønde arbejdede han hos bl.a. Tyrrells, Torbreck, Laughing Jack og Cirillo Estate. Alex er fascineret af de klassiske Franske Rhône-vine og ønsker at give sine egne vine dette klassiske udtryk. Specielt Côte Rôtie fascinerer Alex, hvilket er årsagen til at hans to top Shiraz'er er døbt "The Blonde" og "The Brunette" efter disse to berømte marker i Côte Rôtie.

Alex producerer "New Scool" Barossa vine med fokus på elegance, friskhed, balance og renhed i frugten. Dette opnås via lavt udbytte, relativt tidlig høst, langsom vinifikation og største opmærksomhed for alle detaljer i hele vinifikationsprocessen. Succesen har ikke ladet vente på sig: Australiens førende vinskribent, James Halliday, har allerede givet Head Wines de maksimale 5 stjerner og helt op til 97 points for vinene. Den kendte amerikanske vinskribent, James Suckling (tidligere Wine Spectator) samt danske VinForum og FinansBureauet har også givet flotte scores til Alex' vine.

Alex Head: The Grenache is sourced from Barossa 'Old Vine' and 'Survivor Vine' vineyards in: Light Pass (1968), Greenock (1962), Williamstown (1968) and Krondorf (1942). The Mourvedre component comes from Seppeltsfield and the Shiraz from Krondorf. Matured for one year in old 500L puncheons. Bottled without filtration or fining. Læs mere her

Alex Head: For 2014 the grape site for 'The Contrarian' is again Marananga on the Western slopes of the Barossa Valley. Fermentation was cool and long with the use of some whole bunches. Foot crushing and pigeage extended the contact time with grape skins and stems which has built more structure and tannin weight. 12 months maturation in 50% new French Demi-Muid (600L) barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Alex Head: From a remarkable single vineyard in the Stone Well sub-region (Blonde in colour soil). Always showing perfume and jube-like blue fruits, this vineyard crops naturally at around 1.5 tonne to the acre. Fermented in 3 different styles including between 2 & 5% Viognier skins (vintage dependant) for between 12-18 days in open-fermenters. This wine also utilises two separate clones of Shiraz which adds another layer of complexity to the wine. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Læs mere her

Alex Head: There is a powerful minerality that runs through this wine, perhaps due to the fact it is the highest altitude vineyard on the Western side of the Barossa at approximately 340-380 m. The soils include deep red clays and large ironstone rocks (Brunette in colour). Partial whole bunch fermentation. Alex Head: A long time coming is the wine to complete the trio of hair colour series Shiraz wines. The fruit was sourced from three rows of old vine Shiraz near the town of Angaston in the Eden Valley. Fermented with 2/3 whole-bunches over a 3 week period with daily manual pigeage. Elevaged for two years in thick staved Demi-Muids of which two thirds were new. Only bottled when Mother Nature permits the length of flavour (the one thing I cannot create).
