Galloni (98 points):
"The 2016 Dow’s Vintage Port is based around the Vinha dos Ecos vineyard behind Bomfim, populated predominantly by mature Touriga Franca vines that were cropped at just 0.68kg per vine. It has a quite astonishing bouquet with layer upon layer of intense black cherry and cassis fruit, touches of clove, leather and a hint of over-ripe Satsuma. This is a mercurial bouquet that keeps changing in the glass, revealing smoky/burning ember scents with time. The palate is quite magnificent – perfectly balanced with a killer thread of acidity slicing through such pure intense black fruit that there is no heaviness at all. There is a sense of thrust on the finish as it fans out with almost careless abandon, a Vintage Port so self-assured that you can only sit back in amazement. Simply one of the best Dow’s ever made."

Wine Spectator (98 points):
"This packs a lot of fun, with a wallop of blackberry, fig, boysenberry and açaiberry compote flavors working together, laced with a mouthwatering licorice snap note and driven by a fresh, well-detailed finish. A roasted apple wood accent is integrated as well, lending textural contrast through the vivacious finish. Best from 2030 through 2055."

Decanter (98 points):
"Tight-knit, with firm, rapier-like tannins on the palate – a ramrod all the way through with the opulence and flesh of the fruit on the finish. Fine-grained with great purity and expression. Leaner and much more restrained in style than others: the drier style of Dow works really well in ripe years such as 2016 (as it did in 2011). Outstanding wine for the long term."

Roy Hersh (97++ points):
"For a few brief whiffs and sips, I was immediately enamored, or to be more accurate: blown away! The absolute density of extract here was far closer to black than dark purple, with full opacity. From the grapes of Bomfim & Qta. da Senhora, this baby is medium-full weight, proffering brash blackcurrant and cassis flavors. There is a soft mercurial underbelly to this Port, yet it remains dense, intense and massively concentrated due to the gorgeous Touriga Franca. Lush and black fruited with a powerful and chiseled spine, the extra-long lingering length and cocoa aftertaste was remarkable. Another in a long line of great Dow’s. This is the Port … that if I was still alive, I’d be drinking to see in the next Millennium and have little doubt it would be extraordinary at that point in time!"

Gastro (97 points):
"En slags evighed på flaske. Ganske enkelt fantastisk i ordets oprindelige unikke betydning. Har noget fortidigt, urgammelt over sig og virker som om den kan leve til solen slukkes. Fuld af viol, blåbærlikør, mentollakrids, presset tørret kirsebær og sod. Kraftfuld, viril, reaktiv og tannisk, men selvsagt sød, dog fremstår strukturen tydeligt. Basalt en af de bedste unge portvine, jeg har smagt."

Richard Mayson (Dow 2016 *****):

“Great purity and expression, the drier style of Dow works well in ripe years like 2016. Outstanding wine for the long term. Score: 19/20.”

Matthew Jukes (19+/20):
"DOW’s is controlled, detailed, very fine and it rolls along on the palate for an age. Classy, dense and self-confident, this is darker-hued creation with calmness and concentration and it is a very successful wine in 2016. Score: 19+/20.”
