"One of the finest Douro estates, Quinta do Bomfim is at the heart of Dow’s, providing the main structure for its legendary Vintage Ports since 1896. The estate is situated in the Upper Douro Valley with schist slopes arranged in vineyard terraces, which have yielded Dow’s most memorable wines for over a century. The sister estate of Senorha, the south-facing vineyards give fine even ripening with excellent ripeness. This wine shows plenty of muscle and power, spicy tannins and freshly cut hedgerow sapidity supported by notable freshness, sweet cassis and blackberry fruit and prominent palate texture and definition. Focused, powerful and very long. Plenty of the Dow ‘dark horse’ broody character."
Roy Hersh - For the Love of Port (95+ points):
"Dark black as if peering down a deep water well. A fine blend of Touriga Franca and Nacional which together formed 70% of the mix, along with 20% Sousão and 10% of old vine field blend grapes. Aromatically intense and loaded with blueberry, black cherry, cocoa, and black licorice, much of the same profile is found on the palate. A bit riper fruit than usual and while I did guess this one correctly, (the only 2018 that was guessed correctly) it still provided a dry style overall, with sinfully delicious blueberry, licorice and blackberry flavors, that were reminiscent of Gould Campbell in lots of ways. The tannins are powerful, chalky and chiseled, with ample acidity, the balance is spot on and the texture is nothing short of spectacularly elegant and seductive. The extraordinary persistence and dry essence at the end of this Port, screams, “DOW’S”. One of the best Vintage Ports of 2018, this speaks to the purity of Bomfim’s character and firm spine that is elicited in Dow’s VP’s since the Symington’s purchased this phenomenal property. This Port has the fruit and structure to drink well for 4-5 decades."

The 2018 Quinta do Bomfim from Dow's comes from a south-facing vineyard, all the fruit vinified on site. Just 965 cases were produced, 3% of the Quinta's production. It has a compelling bouquet with intense blackberry, raspberry, clove, pain d'épice and light sage scents, complex and very engaging. The palate is well balanced with a firm backbone a tangy, white pepper infused entry. There is admirable tension thanks to the acidity and the finish feels very controlled and focused, peppermint lingering on the aftertaste. This is a very impressive Bomfim for long-term ageing."

"A thoroughly beautiful young vintage Port with blackberries, black olives, citrus, and black chocolate. Cassis, too. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, tight and polished with extremely precise tannins and wonderful length. 400 cases made. Smallest production ever. Best after 2027."
